Which Smart Speaker? (Sonos One vs. Amazon Echo Plus)

Rapidly changing technology and revolution in wireless communication has brought changes in our daily life styles. We are getting much more dependent on automated devices and artificial intelligence (A-I). The automation has now come to our homes and bringing everything from kitchen appliances, home appliances and electrical appliances to be operated / automated from person single touch or voice.

This type of high level automation is known as “home automation“. There are lots of smart devices launched by many companies to bring ease and comfort in our home and daily lives. In this article we shall discuss two of those smart devices namely Echo plus and sonos one.

Echo Plus:

What is Amazon’s Alexa Chatbot?

The Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant or “Chatbot” is a versatile software developed by Amazon Lab126. 

It is capable of voice interaction, music playback, making to-do lists, setting alarms, streaming podcasts, playing audiobooks, and providing weather, traffic, sports, and other real-time information, such as news. Alexa can also control several smart devices using itself as a home automation system. Users are able to extend the Alexa capabilities by installing “skills” (additional functionality developed by third-party vendors, in other settings more commonly called apps such as weather programs and audio features).

Alexa with Echo Plus:

In order to connect your smart home device to Echo plus Alexa, you have to keep the minimum distance of 30 feet between the two. Now turn off any Bluetooth connected devices. Turn your smart home device in pairing mode and simply say “Alexa, discover my devices

It can play music, answer questions, read the news, check the weather, set alarms, control compatible smart home devices, and more.

The Alexa enabled device like Echo plus can be controlled via “Alexa App” easily available on Apple App Store and Google Play. Download and install it in your smartphone or iPhone. This app can be used to install “skills” for Alexa. With tens of thousands of skills and counting, Alexa is always getting smarter and adding new skills like tracking fitness, playing games, and more.

Sonos One:

Technical Details:

Sonos One is the first generation, voice controlled smart speaker with Amazon Alexa Built-in. The same Amazon Alexa (VA) is used by this smart speaker device. The same method is used for pairing smart home devices with Sonos One as for the Echo Plus. The Sonos One can speak to you and hear you when you are near it. If you are busy in some work and want to listen to your favorite song just say “Alexa, play 90’s dance music”. This is all possible by built in Amazon Alexa Virtual Assistant (VA)

One Touch Control

Tap to turn up the volume. Swipe to skip a track. Mute the microphone for privacy. Sonos One’s touch controls (touch sensitive surface) are at a single tap of your finger. Start and control your music with your finger. Swiping right or left skips forward and backwards through your current playlist, while tapping in the center of the surface plays and pauses your music. Finally, tapping the left and right halves of the panel raise and lower the volume.
